Choosing the Correct Breed to Join Your Family

Man’s best friend – or not…

Why choosing the correct breed to join your family is the most important choice you will make.

Owning a pet can be a fantastic experience. Of course it could also turn into a nightmare that will put you off of pets forever. The latter experience can AND SHOULD be avoided because owning a dog can be the most rewarding relationship that you have ever started.

Dogs are nature’s anti-depressants. They are loyal companions and studies have shown that they hold many health benefits (lowering blood pressure and stress levels). Family dogs even more so as they force you to be active and teach kids to engage in social situations.

There are so many things to consider before selecting a dog, things like:

  • Will he stay indoors or outdoors?
  • Will this dog be compatible with children?
  • Is my yard big enough for this breed?
  • Do I have the time to give this dog the attention it needs?

We have researched and compiled what experts call the correct breed, according to your reason for adding a dog to your family:
Family dogs (interacting with children):

  • Beagles
  • Labradors
  • Golden Retrievers
  • Miniature poodles
  • Pugs

Why? These dogs are easy to get along with, not violent by nature and very energetic. They have a high tolerance level when it comes to children and won’t require too much maintenance.

Energetic dogs (for extreme fitness fanatics)

  • Australian Shepherd
  • Border Collie
  • Dalmatian
  • Siberian Husky

These breeds are perfect for people who live an active lifestyle and want a dog with some ‘get up and go’.

Easy to train dogs

  • Border Collie
  • German Shepherd
  • Doberman Pincher
  • Rottweiler

These dogs are great at performing specific tasks and can be trained to do seemingly difficult tasks. This includes herding, guard dogs and police canine unit dogs.

Hypo-Allergenic dogs

  • Yorkshire Terrier
  • Chinese Crested
  • Poodle (Standard)
  • Miniature Schnauzer

Some of us are unfortunate enough to be allergic to man’s best friend, but this does not mean you have to miss out on the most loyal companion you will ever have. These hypo-allergenic dogs will suit any pet owner with animal allergies.

Lapdogs

  • Chihuahua
  • Dachshund
  • Pekingese
  • Pug
  • Pomeranian
  • Yorkshire Terrier

These dogs are perfect if you want a companion in your home as they are tiny and love lots of cuddles and attention. They are very laid back and will stay by your side 24/7.

We hope that you consider your needs as well as your environment when making this very important decision. Why not try out one of the many questionnaires available to test what breed would suit you?

Remember that a dog is a lifelong commitment. He may only be a SMALL part of your life, but to him you are his WHOLE life.
