Changing Your Dog’s Food ( to WUMA! of course )

Ever had that sinking feeling after changing your dog’s food knowing that for the next week you will have to live with awful smells, and will have to pick up loose stools and patches of vomit mixed with grass daily? Well, that’s because dogs’ digestive systems differ from ours.

You and I can eat pasta for lunch, steak for dinner and curry tomorrow, and we’re fine. Dogs are different. Believe it or not, the microflora (bacteria) which dogs use to digest their food cannot cope with sudden big changes. Different bacteria in their stomachs digest different nutrients in food. Any sudden changes in their diets can lead to poor digestion and stomach upsets because the microflora has not had time to adapt to the new ingredients in the food.

WUMA! Dog Food, for example, is specially formulated for optimal nutrition. It contains a range of vitamins, minerals, joint health supplements and anti-oxidants to boost immunity, some or all of which may be new ingredients for your dog. Also, WUMA! contains no soya, no artificial colourants or flavourants, meaning a drastic change when compared to what they may have been eating.

So, what to do? The secret is to gradually change to the new food. You need to give your dog’s digestive system time to adapt to the new diet, and to let those microflora get into full gear for digesting the new ingredients.

Generally, the guideline for making the change is 7 days. Here is how to go about it:

  • Day 1 and 2: Feed 75% of previous dog food and 25% of new dog food.
  • Day 3 and 4: Feed 50% of previous dog food and 50% of new dog food.
  • Day 5 and 6: Feed 25% of previous dog food and 75% of new dog food.
  • Day 7: Feed new food only.

If your dog is sensitive and prone to develop tummy problems, you may want to increase the change-over period. Puppies can be particularly sensitive, and if you see any signs of stomach upset after day 1, reduce the amount of new food and increase the number of days. Every dog is different, and you will be the best judge of how to go about it.
